BSA/AML is the core of a financial crime programme: the policies, risk assessment, monitoring, investigations and regulatory reporting that a regulated institution must run to stay licensed. The work sits between the business and the examiners — writing the risk assessment, defending the coverage of the monitoring, filing suspicious activity reports, and evidencing that the programme actually operates the way the manual says it does.
Entry is usually through an alert queue or an investigations team: clearing monitoring alerts, escalating what deserves a case, and writing narratives that hold up on review. From there the ladder runs through investigations lead, programme roles (risk assessment, model governance, quality assurance), and ultimately the BSA Officer or MLRO seat, which carries named regulatory accountability. A certification such as CAMS is common but rarely decisive on its own — written case work is what gets read.
Structurally, demand follows enforcement and licensing rather than the hiring cycle: consent orders, lookbacks, new charters and new products all create headcount that is hard to defer. That is why BSA/AML remains the widest discipline on this board — the live counts on this page are computed directly from the index, and the Remediation Watch tracks the actions that tend to precede a hiring push.
