SDN List (Specially Designated Nationals)

OFAC's list of individuals and entities whose property and interests in property are blocked, and with whom US persons are generally prohibited from dealing.

Why it matters

The SDN list is the operative list for US sanctions compliance, but it is not the only one — OFAC maintains several consolidated non-SDN lists with different prohibitions. Treating 'sanctions' as synonymous with 'SDN' is a common and visible gap in candidates.

In practice

Blocking means freezing and reporting, not rejecting. A blocked property report is due to OFAC within 10 business days, and blocked property must be reported annually. The distinction between blocking and rejecting a transaction is a standard interview question for sanctions roles.
