Politically Exposed Person (PEP)
An individual entrusted with a prominent public function, together with their immediate family and close associates, whose position creates elevated corruption and money-laundering risk.

Why it matters
PEP screening produces enormous false-positive volume and is one of the clearest examples of risk-based judgement in practice. US regulators have been explicit that PEP status alone does not require EDD — a point candidates get wrong constantly.
In practice
There is no single official PEP list; institutions rely on commercial data. Categories generally split into foreign, domestic, and international-organisation PEPs, with foreign PEPs attracting the most scrutiny. The 2020 US interagency statement clarified that the term does not include US public officials and that institutions should apply a risk-based approach rather than treating every PEP as high risk automatically.
