A person who receives and transfers funds obtained from others, knowingly or unwittingly, on behalf of someone else — moving criminal proceeds while obscuring their origin.

Why it matters
Mule detection sits at the boundary between fraud and AML, and that boundary is where a growing share of roles now live. Institutions that have merged fraud and AML operations into a single financial crime function are the ones hiring for both skill sets at once.
In practice
Typical indicators include rapid in-and-out movement, account activity inconsistent with the customer's profile, new accounts receiving unexpected inbound payments, and links across accounts sharing devices or addresses. Recruitment often runs through job scams and romance fraud, which is why victims and perpetrators are not cleanly separable and why disposition decisions are genuinely difficult.
