Transaction Monitoring Interview Questions

18 questions · analyst to manager · last reviewed September 1, 2026

Transaction monitoring interviews are about coverage and evidence: which typologies your scenarios detect, how thresholds were chosen, and how you proved the system still works after you changed it.

Expect at least one question you cannot answer with vendor terminology. Panels probe the reasoning behind a tuning decision, not the name of the tool that executed it.

Analyst questions

Scenario logic, alert quality, and data literacy.

  1. 01Pick a scenario you have worked and explain what it is designed to catch.

  2. 02Your alert volume doubled overnight. What are the first three things you check?

What they're really askingData feed, customer segment change, and threshold or scenario deployment — a candidate who jumps straight to 'more crime' has never run a queue.

  3. 03What is a segment, and why does segmentation change alert quality?

  4. 04How do you tell a data quality problem from a genuine behaviour change?

  5. 05What does a productive alert look like in your reporting?

  6. 06Which typologies do rules handle badly, and what do you use instead?

Senior analyst / tuning questions

Threshold testing, model governance, and documentation.

  1. 01Walk me through a full tuning cycle for one scenario.

What they're really askingHypothesis, sample, above- and below-the-line testing, sign-off, and the documentation pack. Missing the below-the-line step is the standard failure.

  2. 02How do you evidence coverage of a typology across your scenario inventory?

  3. 03What does model validation ask for that tuning documentation usually lacks?

  4. 04How do you test a machine-learning detection layer against a rules baseline?

  5. 05How would you approach a lookback where the monitoring gap is already known?

  6. 06What is your position on productivity as a tuning metric?

Manager questions

Inventory ownership, change governance, and examiner defence.

  1. 01An examiner asks why you set this threshold. What do you hand them?

What they're really askingA documented rationale with the testing behind it. 'It came with the system' ends the interview.

  2. 02How do you govern scenario change without freezing the programme?

  3. 03How do you decide when to retire a scenario?

  4. 04You are migrating monitoring platforms. How do you avoid a coverage gap during cutover?

  5. 05How do you size an investigations team against expected alert volume?

  6. 06What has independent testing found in your monitoring, and what changed?

Frequently asked

What is the most common transaction monitoring interview mistake?

Describing tuning as false-positive reduction only. Panels expect below-the-line testing that shows the change did not create false negatives.

Do I need to know a specific monitoring platform?

Platform familiarity helps and appears in postings, but the questions that decide the round are about scenario logic, thresholds, and documentation.

How much SQL is expected?

Enough to pull and sanity-check your own samples. Tuning and quality-assurance roles increasingly ask for a practical data exercise.
